Nothing on Facebook is Private

>
Or really the Internet for that matter. Have you ever wished that you could take back something that you said over the Internet? Or maybe remove an embarrassing photo or video you uploaded when you were not in sound mind? I'm sure you have, I know I have, we've all done some rather stupid things during our youth for sure or even in our adult years. However, what is done, is done on the Internet.

The Internet is Not a Place for Private Thoughts

But on the Internet, there are really no take backs. Sure you can set something to private, to only be viewed by your friends. However, chances are that one day that friend can really go behind your back and really screw you over. Its a lesson that many people I think are learning the hard way. If you have a photo or a video online for more than a couple of hours, the chances are rather strong that someone has downloaded it to their computer somewhere.

On the Internet, everything that is put there is forever. Granted, it will disappear into oblivion, unless it goes viral or you're a famous person. And if you're a famous person, trust me, no one believes that your Twitter or Facebook or whatever was hacked into. It's possible granted, but that excuse has been used so many times by celebrities or people who should know better to try and get themselves out of trouble, its ceased having any believable.

A secret is only a secret when you're the only person that knows it. Don't post things that can come back to haunt you later. The only place that thoughts are private are within the scope of your own mind. Facebook or any other social network is not the place to air out dirty laundry that is private. If anything is on the Internet, people will find out.

Do not assume that setting things to private where only friends can view them means privacy. Friendships crumble and that's ammunition that they can use to destroy you. So keep that in mind.
